The Bixby Hill neighborhood is nestled between Seventh Street on the south and California State University Long Beach (CSULB) on the south. Across Seventh Street to the south is the neighborhood of University Park Estates. This neighborhood is different than many others in Long Beach for several reasons. Not only is this a gated community, but the gate is guarded 24 hours a day. In addition, homes in this neighborhood sit on fairly large lots – averaging 8,000 square feet, with some as large as 12,000 square feet. Because of that, Bixby Hill is the only gated community in Long Beach that offers newer homes (construction here started around the 1970s) with a spacious neighborhood feel. Also located within the gates of this community is Rancho Los Alamitos. This registered historic site has been restored and is still working today, and features a large barn, four-acre gardens, an adobe-core ranch house, and traces of the ancestral Tongva village of the Povuu’ngna people.
