If you’re planning to move to a new neighborhood, how do you do that from home? If you’re moving someplace locally, you might jump in the car and drive around a bit. But what if you’re moving across the country? How do you go about exploring a neighborhood from far away?

How to Explore Neighborhoods from Home

  1.  You can search social media sites and online for information about particular areas. Additionally, check to see if there is a Facebook group for the neighborhood you’re considering. That can be a great way to virtually meet residents and ask questions.
  2. You can do a “virtual” walk around an area with Google Street View. Plus, you might even see some funny sights along the way. (Check out some of the funny Google Street View sitings in this Mashable post.)
  3.  You can browse websites data online. Some neighborhoods, complexes, and housing developments have reviews that you can find. Our website has extensive information on Long Beach neighborhoods. You can find that here: Long Beach Neighborhood Information 
  4.  You can investigate schools and educational data on sites like GreatSchools.org. The Long Beach Unified School District’s website also has extensive information on its site.
  5. You can check safety ratings. Police departments and other sites can provide you with information on crime in a particular area.
  6. You can check your daily commute. Plug the starting and ending points into Google Maps or Waze to test commute times at various times of the day. Keep in mind that the commute now is likely to be very different from when some of the current restrictions are eased.
  7. Contact a real estate agent. If you know what features of a neighborhood are important to you, they may be able to suggest some areas you haven’t even considered.
