Picnic Spots in Long Beach and Beyond

Picnic Spots in Long Beach
Spring is in the air and it just happens to be the perfect season for a picnic! Planning a picnic with friends or family is a great way to soak up the pristine weather that Long Beach offers. There are a number of parks and picnic spots scattered throughout Long Beach and surrounding areas. Here are some of our local favorites:

Hilltop Park – 2351 Dawson Avenue, Signal Hill

If you’re looking for views, then this is the place to go. Enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of Long Beach while enjoying your picnic. There are picnic tables underneath shelters for added shade and comfort, and you can cook up your meal on one of the BBQs. Shelters for larger groups are available for rent. The park itself is kept very clean, and they have both a parking lot and accessible street parking. The drive alone getting up the hill is fun, and a lot of locals don’t even know it’s there.

Colorado Lagoon – 5119 E. Colorado Street, Long Beach

The Colorado Lagoon is a popular spot for picnicking and barbecuing on the weekends. However, construction for the Colorado Lagoon Open Channel Project has begun again, so there are road closures and limited parking. If you’re planning on visiting The Colorado Lagoon picnic area, be sure to plan ahead.

El Dorado Nature Center – 7550 E. Spring Street, Long Beach

The El Dorado Nature Center offers many spots with picnic benches. You can picnic next to the water and watch the turtles or find a more remote, quiet spot for an intimate picnic. Wherever you choose, you’re sure to get some sunlight and a glimpse of nature. Be sure to make a stop across the street to El Dorado Park as well. There is a large duck pond where the kids can feed the ducks.

Balboa Peninsula Park – 100 Main Street, Newport Beach

If you’re looking for a drive and want to get out of Long Beach for a bit, Balboa Peninsula Park is a great spot for a picnic. It’s less than an hour away and you can cruise down PCH for the whole drive. Once you’re there enjoy the ocean views, picnic benches, and the beach playground for the kids.

Shoreline Aquatic Park – 200 Aquarium Way, Long Beach

Enjoy views of the Queen Mary and Shoreline Village in this gorgeous spot. Plus, if you’re not one for packing your own picnic lunch, you can cheat and get takeout from one of Shoreline Village’s many restaurants. Parking can get crowded in this area but packing up your backpack and riding your bike over is a great option.

Bluff Park – 2500 E. Ocean Boulevard, Long Beach

The best part about having a picnic at Bluff Park is the incredible ocean views you’ll get. When you’re done eating you can opt for a walk down the bike path, or down the bluff if you don’t want to get sandy. Telescopes line the bluff as well so you can look at Catalina up close or see if you spot any whales or dolphins.

Mother’s Beach – 5839 E. Appian Way, Long Beach

This is a popular destination for people celebrating basically anything, so if you want a good spot, plan to get there early. Parking can get a little tricky as the day wears on but once you’re settled in, it’s a great spot. There’s plenty of shade, an open grassy area, a playground area, and of course a fun sandy beach to take a dip. There are no waves and there are lifeguards on duty.

Averill Park – 1300 S. Dodson Avenue, San Pedro

If you need a walk after your picnic you can choose from one of many walkways in this scenic, tree-filled park. The kids will love feeding the ducks at the pond as well. This is another great option for you if you’re looking to get out of town for a bit and enjoy a quiet afternoon getaway.
