If you’re thinking about hitting a few balls on the driving range with friends, grabbing a quick 9, or taking in a full 18, here are some of our favorite golf courses to try out in Long Beach.
One of the premier golf courses in the area, the award-winning Skylinks is a 6,909-yard par 72 course owned by the City of Long Beach. Designed by golf course architect Cal Olson, it features Bermuda grass fairways, wide-open links-style play, and gorgeous Bentgrass and Poa annual greens. Along with a casual day out on the links, the course is a wonderful location for a full tournament, wedding, or special event. They also offer lessons for students of all ages who want to improve their game.
Recreation Park American Golf Club
This 18-hole, par 72 golf course is as challenging as it is fun to play. There are tricky elevation changes on the Kikuyu fairways and bunkers carefully placed in front of the Bent and Poa greens. Golfers have the opportunity to play both recreationally and competitively, and all ages are welcomed. They have Men’s and Women’s Clubs, junior golf groups, and group instructions. All of their programs are meant to help golfers improve their skills and connect with the local golf-loving Long Beach community.
Home to the Long Beach Open, El Dorado Park Golf Course is located in picturesque surroundings that feature lush and vibrant landscapes at every turn. The grounds include state-of-the-art practice facilities, the opportunity to be instructed by PGA Professionals, and beautiful event venues. The course was ranked among GolfLink’s Top 100 Golf Courses and was named Wedding Wire’s “Best of 2012.” Whether you are playing on the pristine course or planning your next large event, El Dorado Park Golf Course will exceed your expectations.
This is the self-proclaimed “friendliest executive 9-hole,” and we have a hard time arguing with that. The course features 1,795 yards of golf from the longest tee for a par 30. It was designed by Ron Fream. Everyone is welcomed as this is a daily fee golf course with an “open to public” guest policy. Their tournament packages include green fees, drinks, food, and more, and they are happy to meet the needs of any group.
Heartwell is conveniently located on the northeast side of Long Beach near the 405, 605, and 91 freeways, and is famous for being the course where Tiger Woods started. There are plenty of PGA and LPGA pros on-site for instructions making it a great place for beginners to start getting comfortable on the golf course. Another unique feature is that the practice facilities are open until 10:00 PM (except on Mondays when they close at 5:30 PM), making it the perfect spot to go for after-work or nighttime play. Their Junior Program and Friday Glow Ball events are some of the most popular.
At 415 members, this is one of the most exclusive country clubs in the area. They have a very rich history dating all the way back to 1905 when Colonel Charles R. Drake, the Bixby family, and other prominent local businessmen established the Virginia Country Club. While attending the course as a guest, the club asks that you closely follow all of the rules and guidelines that have been established over 100 years ago. If you do have the opportunity to visit the Virginia Country Club as a guest to golf or for an event, it is sure to be a lovely and memorable experience.
