Nestled along the picturesque coastline of Southern California, Long Beach boasts a variety of beautiful beaches that offer something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly spot, a place to relax and sunbathe, or even some adventure on the water, Long Beach has it all. Let’s explore some of the best local beaches this vibrant city has to offer.
1. Mother’s Beach
Known for its calm waters and family-friendly atmosphere, Mother’s Beach is a favorite among locals with young children. Located in the Marina Park area, this beach features a protected swimming area and playgrounds, making it ideal for a day out with the family. Parking is available nearby in the public lots, and there are picnic areas and BBQ pits if you plan to make a day of it. For food options, consider packing a picnic or grabbing something from one of the nearby cafes.
2. Horny Corner
Horny Corner is the spot where 54th Place splits off from Bay Shore Avenue in Belmont Shore. The calm waters of the bay make a perfect spot for swimming and paddleboarding. Plus it’s right off 2nd Street so there are plenty of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops to enjoy just a few steps away. There is plenty of metered parking along 2nd Street, Bay Shore Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, but it can fill up, especially on sunny weekends!
3. Alamitos Beach
Alamitos Beach is one of Long Beach’s larger and livelier beaches, perfect for those who enjoy a more vibrant atmosphere. Located near downtown Long Beach, this beach stretches along Shoreline Drive and offers volleyball courts, bike paths, and plenty of space for sunbathing and picnicking. Parking is available in the lot at Alamitos Avenue and Ocean Boulevard. Nearby along Broadway, you’ll find several cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat or enjoy a refreshing drink. You’ll also find food trucks and other vendors.
4. Belmont Shore
Known for its charming community feel and bustling beachfront, Belmont Shore is a must-visit for both locals and tourists alike. Parking can be a bit tricky, but there are public lots along Ocean Boulevard and metered parking on the streets. After a day at the beach, explore Second Street just a short walk from the beach for a variety of dining options ranging from casual eateries to fine dining restaurants.
5. Granada Beach / Rosie’s Dog Beach
Granada Beach is another gem along Long Beach’s coastline, offering a more relaxed and laid-back vibe. Located west of the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier, this beach is perfect for picnics, beach volleyball, and even kayaking or paddleboarding. Here you’ll also find Rosie’s Dog Beach, an off-leash beach where your four-legged friend can run on the sand and splash in the ocean. Parking is available at the Granada Boat Launch lot, and there are restrooms and showers for convenience. Nearby, you’ll find snack bars and cafes where you can grab a quick bite.
6. Colorado Lagoon
For a unique beach experience surrounded by nature, head to Colorado Lagoon. This tranquil saltwater lagoon offers calm waters for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. There’s limited parking available in a lot along the lagoon and along adjacent residential streets. One of our favorite Long Beach eateries, Ubuntu Cafe, is right across the street.
7. The Peninsula
The Peninsula in Long Beach is a mile-long neighborhood south of Belmont Shore, separating the Pacific Ocean from Alamitos Bay. Although parking here can be tricky, it’s a popular spot for beach-goers. There’s both a bay side beach, with a walking path between the beach and homes, and an ocean side beach that features a wooden boardwalk. The bay side is quite calm and is a popular spot for sailing and stand-up paddleboarding. The Peninsula is also a great spot for biking and running.
8. Seal Beach
While technically outside Long Beach city limits, Seal Beach is worth mentioning for its proximity and charm. Just across the border from Long Beach, Seal Beach offers a classic Southern California beach experience with a pier, shops, and eateries. Parking is available near the pier and along Main Street. Enjoy fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants or grab a treat from one of the ice cream shops along the beachfront.
