Why Long Beach Continues to Attract Homebuyers Year After Year

When Brad and I moved to Long Beach in 1996, it was after looking at homes all over Orange County and Los Angeles. We chose it because we loved the diversity, the architectural character, and the fact that it was the most affordable coastal community in Southern California. Decades later, home buyers are still choosing Long Beach for many of those same reasons.

Long Beach isn’t just a city—it’s a place with a distinct personality and sense of community. People who move here often describe the same feeling: it just fits. Whether someone is relocating from LA for more space, moving up from a condo, or coming back after time away, Long Beach has a way of drawing people in and making them want to stay.

Here are some of the reasons buyers gravitate to Long Beach:

A City of Distinct Neighborhoods

One of the things that has always stood out to me is how many different lifestyles Long Beach can accommodate. You can find historic homes tucked along quiet, walkable streets, suburban-style neighborhoods with parks and schools around the corner, and coastal areas where the ocean plays a part in your daily routine. There are lively urban pockets with dining and entertainment, and there are peaceful, tucked-away streets where neighbors know each other and stay for years. That variety is one of the city’s biggest strengths—it gives people real choices and helps them find a place that truly fits them. beach-path-horiz

A Coastal Lifestyle That Still Feels Accessible

Long Beach offers the kind of coastal living people imagine when they think about Southern California, but without the price tag of some neighboring beach cities. Miles of bike and walking paths, the marina, waterfront activities, festivals, concerts, and an endless array of outdoor events all contribute to a lifestyle that feels relaxed and vacation-like, yet still very livable. For many buyers, it’s a chance to enjoy the oceanfront energy without feeling priced out.

Strong Schools and Educational Options

Long Beach Unified has long been recognized for offering a wide range of programs and pathways, from STEM and arts to global studies. Many families are attracted to the magnet programs and the district’s reputation for innovation. And of course, Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach add higher education opportunities as well.

Local Flavor and Plenty to Do

Long Beach is the kind of place where you can spend Saturday mornings at a neighborhood farmers market, wander through independent shops and cafés, or try a new restaurant every weekend and still not make a dent in the local food scene. There are community events, art walks, waterfront activities, outdoor movies, and seasonal celebrations. It’s a city with a hometown feel but an impressive range of things to do, much of it locally created and supported.

Convenient, Yet Still Its Own Destination

The location has always been a major draw. With access to both LA and Orange County, it’s ideal for people who work in different parts of the region. Freeway access, the Metro A Line, and the ease of Long Beach Airport make getting around surprisingly simple. But the funny thing is, once people settle in, many realize they don’t feel the need to leave very often. Long Beach has enough character, convenience, and charm to stand on its own.

A Market That Holds Its Value

Because Long Beach offers so much—varied housing, coastal amenities, strong schools, and a vibrant culture—demand tends to stay steady even when the broader market shifts. It’s the kind of city where people choose to stay for the long haul, and that stability continues to make it appealing to new buyers.

Thinking About Buying or Selling in Long Beach?

Even though I’m now working in an advisory and referral role from France, I’m still very connected to the Long Beach market. I regularly collaborate with experienced, trustworthy agents who understand the nuances of the city and can guide you with care. If you or someone you know is thinking about making a move, I’d be happy to connect you with a local expert who will take great care of you.
