Beyond Brunch for Mother’s Day

What did you do for Mom last year? How about the year before that? Chances are that “brunch” probably had something to do with it. And while we all love mimosas and eggs benedict, why not surprise your mom with something a little different this year?

Here are some fun suggestions for things to do around Long Beach for Mother’s Day other than taking her to brunch. And hey, why not do both? You know she deserves it.

“Quiet Storm Sundays” with Jeff Lorber

Head over to Harvelle’s Long Beach on Mother’s Day from 5:30 – 7:00 PM and listen to the jazz stylings of famed pianist, composer, producer, and bandleader Jeff Lorber. Mom will love the funk and soul inspiration that Lorber brings to his compositions. Described as a “pioneer keyboardist” in the music industry, Lorber has recently celebrated his 40th recording anniversary, and can also add “Grammy winner” to his list of accolades, as he won his first Grammy for his Jeff Lorber Fusion recording Prototype in the category of Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2018. This concert would be the perfect way to wind down after a day full of Mother’s Day celebrations.

Rockin’ Mother’s Day Run

Does your mom love getting out in the fresh air and enjoying a nice long walk or run? Join her by participating in the Rockin’ Mother’s Day Run! There are plenty of options for all fitness levels, including a 5K, 10K, 15K, half marathon, ⅔ marathon, and full marathon. The race route takes you through scenic Long Beach city streets, around a lake, and by the oceanfront. The aid station will be stocked with Gatorade, water, bananas, chips, cookies, and other goodies, and all finishers will receive a 5” medal.

Mother’s Day Paint and Sip at Paint for a Purpose

Does Mom have an artsy side? This would be a really fun event to take her to! Painting is a wonderful way to relax and de-stress, and we all know moms will definitely appreciate that part. This is a two-hour course and it’s lead by a painting pro who is trained to walk you through each step so you’re guaranteed to go home with a painting you’ll be proud to hang on the wall. For the special Mother’s Day class, you and Mom will each create half of a larger painting on one canvas, and they will fit together to create a larger composition. If you have an odd number in your group they will happily accommodate you as well. All supplies are provided, and beverages are also available for a small donation.

Mother’s Day Reggae Show

This is definitely something new and different for Mother’s Day! The event is put on by Fully Fullwood and takes place every Sunday at Golden Sails Hotel, and the proceeds are donated to Reggae for a Reason which works to help support homeless and disadvantaged youth in California. The Reggae concerts are a fun and relaxing environment that the whole family will enjoy, and there’s also a full appetizer and dinner menu available, along with a full bar. You can celebrate mom while also supporting your community this year!

Mother’s Day at Shoreline

Shoreline Village is putting on a spectacular celebration in honor of Mom this year! She will love getting to relax with all her favorite people (that’s you) while enjoying live jazz music and waterfront dining. The band Hedgehog Swing will be performing from 12:00 – 3:00 PM on the Off-Boardwalk stage, and there are a lot of restaurants to choose from throughout the entire Shoreline Village.

Mother’s Day Tea at Rancho Los Cerritos

Pamper your mother with a traditional Tea Party! Enjoy tea sandwiches, delicious scones, artisan tea, and champagne all served to you by costumed docents. The Tea Party will happen from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM, and then after you can stroll around the property and enjoy the serene gardens and gorgeous atmosphere that makes Rancho Los Cerritos so special. Keep in mind that you do need tickets for this event, so make sure and contact them to purchase yours before Sunday.
